Darjeeling - Queen of the Hills

Cuddled by mighty mountains and shielded in the arms of rolling valleys, Darjeeling, fondly called 'Queen of the Hills' is a town in West Bengal. Located in the Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalaya at an average elevation of 2,050 m, Darjeeling has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though the history of Darjeeling can be traced back to 1790s, it is during the period between East India Company's acquisition in 1835 and setting up of a sanatorium and a military depot in Darjeeling in the mid-19th century, which marked the development of the town.

As Darjeeling was a popular hill station during the British Raj, a lovely Victorian town was built among the Himalayan foothills which eventually became the de-facto summer capital of India.
