As a hotelier, I am deeply inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a movement that has united citizens across India to embrace cleanliness and sustainability. It’s heartening to see our nation striving to follow the eco-friendly practices of developed countries. However, it makes me wonder—why don’t we extend the same respect to the hotels and restaurants in Darjeeling, or anywhere we visit?
Why Respect Hotel Resources?
Hotels are often treated differently by guests, as if paying for a room grants the right to misuse amenities. Instances where TVs are left on, taps are running unnecessarily, or heating devices are used carelessly are all too common. These behaviours waste valuable resources like water and energy, which are scarce in many regions, including Darjeeling.
Some guests even misuse towels and bed linens or take items like bathrobes, bed runners, or decorative pieces. While amenities like bath gels and conditioners are meant for personal use, other items are not included in the room rent. Respecting these resources ensures that hotels can continue providing exceptional service without overburdening the environment or their budgets.
Lessons in Sustainable Travel
Sustainable tourism isn’t just about visiting eco-friendly destinations; it’s about practising responsible travel habits. I once hosted a large group from China, and their actions left a lasting impression. Despite their affluence, they avoided wasting food and used resources conservatively. For instance, they shared napkins to minimize laundry needs, understanding the water scarcity in the region. If travellers from other countries can show such sensitivity, why can’t we adopt the same approach in our homeland?
Small Changes, Big Impact
Turn off lights, TVs, and heaters when not in use.Use bathroom amenities responsibly.
Avoid wasting water, food, and other resources.
Treat hotel property as you would your own home.
By adopting these small habits, you contribute to eco-friendly tourism in Darjeeling and beyond. Hotels are an integral part of a nation’s infrastructure and deserve the same care and respect as public spaces.
